Master of Education in Counseling. Master of Education in Counseling. The Master of Education Ed. M in Counseling program at Boston University is committed to developing outstanding counseling professionals with the skills, commitment, and passion to work effectively with diverse populations. Our program offers three concentrations, catering to a diverse body of students and corresponding to different elective coursework and field experiences. Regardless of each individual students concentration, we prepare all students with the knowledge and skills to work with a wide range of populations and mental health issues. We help students attain their professional goals in any number of settings, including but not limited to schools and universities, mental health counseling agencies, behavioral health settings, addiction treatment centers, group homes, residential treatment centers, hospitals, and private practice settings. Our students learn through a combination of sequenced coursework, pertaining to the treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults in areas such as counseling theories and techniques, cross cultural perspectives, lifespan development, psychopathology, psychological testing, research, positive psychology, and ethics, as well as through ample and diverse hands on experiences in the field in order to build and refine clinical skills and further develop professional counselor identity. We welcome students from a variety of backgrounds who have an interest in the principles and practices underlying the field of counseling, and a demonstrable understanding of their concentration of interest. Each of our concentrations, while dependent on the same core training, offers experiences both within the classroom and beyond it that best prepare students for their areas of interest In our School Counseling concentration, students receive a comprehensive training in mental health issues and counseling rather than explicitly emphasizing academic counseling, as many School Counseling graduate programs do. Students can further concentrate their interests with additional coursework specific to school counseling in areas such as learning disabilities, vocational development, college admissions, families, and issues in school counseling. Students enrolled in our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Counseling concentration are prepared for a career providing counseling to children, adolescents, and young adults in community based settings that include, but are not limited to, community mental health facilities, hospitals, therapeutic schools, substance abuse treatment facilities, eating disorder treatment facilities, and universities. Our Sports Psychology concentration includes coursework in sport psychology skills, psychology of coaching teams, sport theory, sports science, and sport psychology research. A unique aspect of the sports psychology concentration is that students complete 4.
